Fairmont, MN --- Funeral services for Clarence G. “Pete” Werling, 94, of Fairmont, MN, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 16, 2011, at the Chapel of the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Burial will be held at a later date in the Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Chapel of the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Clarence passed away Saturday, September 10, 2011, at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Fairmont. The Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Clarence George “Pete” Werling was born December 8, 1916, in Hardy, IA, the son of Carl and Malinda (Levine) Werling. As a young boy, Clarence grew up in Renwick, IA, and graduated from Vernen Consolidated High School in 1934. On January 20, 1942, Pete was inducted into the United States Army where he served his country overseas during World War II in the 204th Infantry Battalion earning the rank of T5. On October 28, 1945, he received his honorable discharge and moved to St. Joseph, IA, where he was owner and operator of Pete’s Garage. On June 10, 1949, Clarence was united in marriage to Mildred “Bobby” Kutnink at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Together the couple made their home in St. Joseph and worked together at the Garage. In 1979, the couple moved to South Silver Lake where Pete enjoyed days spent fishing and woodworking. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Mildred “Bobby” Werling of Fairmont, MN; two sisters, Gladys Vesterby of Rutland, IA, and Lucille Brown of Ringstead, IA; four sisters-in-law, Irene Erickson of Albert Lea, MN, Lavera Claeys of Winnebago, MN, Violet Lueth of Fairmont, MN, and Jeannine Kutnink of Minneapolis, MN; one brother-in-law, Elmer Kutnink and his wife, Judy of Fairmont, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Malinda Werling; an infant brother, Melvin; and two brothers-in-law, Joy Vesterby and Charles Brown.
