Mrs. Emma Vogel, 79, died Saturday, July 22, at the Hawarden hospital where she had been a patient since the preceding Monday. Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning of last week at St. Mary's church with Fr. R. Graf saying requiem mass. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery under the direction of the Frazier Funeral Service.
Emma Birdsall was born July 11, 1871, near Cedar Rapids. She moved with her parents to Lake City where she received her education. She was married to George Vogel, May 1, 1889 and went to Tama to live where her husband was employed as a machinist by the North Western Railroad Company. Later she moved to Lake City, then to Eagle Grove and in 1909 she came to Hawarden where Mr. Vogel was shop foreman for the North Western. In 1928, two years after he retired from service, Mr. and Mrs. Vogel returned to Lake City to care for her mother. Mr. Vogel died December 15, 1938 and in 1940 Mrs. Vogel returned to Hawarden.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. J. B. Schiefen of Hawarden and Mrs. Elizabeth Trainor of Chicago; a sister, Mrs. G. Grooters of Fort Dodge, seven grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. A daughter Florenda [Florinda] preceded her in death. Those from a distance who attended the funeral included Mrs. Trainor of Chicago, Mrs. Grooters of Fort Dodge, and Mrs. R. F. Morgan of Waterloo.
