Ruth Carolyn Nelson, the daughter of Kasper and Anna (Johnson) Nelson was born at Chicago, Ill. She was baptized January 6, 1904 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Chicago. In 1915, the Nelson family moved to Thor where Ruth was confirmed in the Ullensvang Lutheran Church and educated in the Thor School. She was united in marriage to John O. Hanson May 19, 1923 at Humboldt. The couple farmed near Thor and later in the Livermore community and were farming near LuVerne when Mr. Hanson died in 1969. Mrs. Hanson made her home in Rutland where she was a member of the Rutland Trinity Lutheran Church and E.L.C.W. of the church and was a former member of the Rutland Federated Women's club.

Ruth Hanson passed away at the Humboldt Care Center North on the Evening of April 22 at the age of 89 years. She is survived by her daughters, Doris Catalano of Tecumseh, Michigan and Loretta Grebner of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas; sons, Wayne D. Hanson of Duncombe and John R. Hanson of Rutland; 12 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren; sister, Marion Krass of Fort Dodge and cousin and close family member, Anna Lund of Humboldt. She was preceded in death by her husband, granddaughter and great granddaughter. Burial in East Ullensvang Cemetery, Thor, Iowa.
