February 19, 1885 --- June 16, 1977

Mrs. Alta Baines, 92, a longtime resident of Spirit Lake, died Thursday, June 16, 1977 at the Hilltop House Nursing Home, Spirit Lake, where she had resided for seven years. Born in Hamilton County in 1885, she resided in that farm community with her parents until her marriage in 1901 to Will Hicks. They moved to Galt and later to Webster City. Five children were born to this union: Mrs. Helen Utt, Mrs. Vera Jondal, Clyde Hicks, Lyle Hicks, all deceased now, and Mrs. Leota Dyle of Bismark, Mo. Her Husband died in 1924. In 1925 she married J. A. Baines of Spirit Lake. One daughter was born to this union: Mrs. Gloria Swanson of Santa Clara, Calif. Mr. Baines died in 1935. She is also survived by one sister: Mrs. Bessie Paul of Mason City; one step-daughter: Mrs. Ethel Ostheimer of Terril; two step-sons: Morton Baines of Spirit Lake and Elmer Baines of Genesco, Ill., 18 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
