Local author, Rosalie Hunt Mellor, age 91, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Evergreen Terrace. Until the last month of her life, she lived at her home in Blackberry, surrounded by her books, writing projects, pets, family and friends. Rosalie was born Feb. 21, 1920, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, to Gladys (Johnson) and Chester Allen Hunt Sr. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1945 with a B.A. in English. On Jan. 5, 1946, she married John Joseph Mellor in Webster City, Iowa. Their daughter, Sula, was born in 1947 and son, Joseph, in 1949, both in Iowa. Rosalie taught English for a time, "teaching young people how to write a proper letter and foisting upon them the joys of Shakespeare." Then she retired early to her true vocation, "rambling in the woods, gathering mushrooms, welcoming the loons, walking dogs and training horses." Rosalie always found great pleasure in writing poetry, magazine articles, and short stories. She was included in the Minnesota anthology NORTH WOODS and wrote two biographies, LOGAN'S WIFE and THE INTREPID GRINGO. She was a member of the Grand Rapids Writer's Group and the Blackberry Seventh-day Adventist Church where she served as an elder and a Bible study teacher for many years.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John Mellor; brothers Chester Hunt Jr. and Jerry Hunt; and sister Maxine Matacio. Survivors include her daughter, Sula Lane (Douglas) of Grand Rapids, Minn.; her son, Joseph Mellor (Roberta) of Portland, Ore.; sisters, Phyllis Howell (Donald) of Corona, Calif. and Bonnie Thompson of Oceanside, Calif.; brother, Roger Hunt (Valerie) of San Marcos, Texas; four grandchildren, Oliver Mellor (Stephanie) of Cornelius, Ore., Rebecca Scoggins (Jeff) of Brainerd, Minn., Brent Lane (Sara Swanson) of Bovey, Minn. and Cathy Cleaver (Patrick) of Portland, Ore.; 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Service: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the Blackberry Seventh-day Adventist Church. Burial will be in the Hazelwood Cemetery. Cremation was entrusted to Twin Cities Cremation of St Paul, MN. Memorials may be made to the Grand Rapids Area Library or the American Cancer Society.
