SHEFFIELD, IA - Jean Brouwer, 75, of Sheffield, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., today, Wednesday, June 22, at First United Methodist Church in Sheffield with Pastor Janet Reickhoff-Faris presiding. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Jean Catherine Brouwer was born Nov. 24, 1935, at Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of Howard and Mildred (Madison) Wearda. At a young age, her family moved to Sheffield. She graduated from Sheffield High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Jean taught school in Cedar Falls, Clarion and Rockwell Community Schools. Jean was united in marriage with Gordon B. Brouwer Dec. 26, 1959, in Sheffield. After the birth of their daughter, Cindy, Jean filled in as a substitute teacher in the Sheffield-Chapin School. Jean was a member of First United Methodist Church, Sheffield, and was active in the UMW and Study Clubs. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sheffield Philharmonic and the Sheffield Coffee Ladies. Jean was a devoted grandmother, traveling to visit her grandchildren and many of their programs and games. She enjoyed cross-stitch and playing cards she was a member of Bridge and 500 clubs. With Gordon she liked to travel and they visited London, Morocco, Acapulco, Mexico, Hawaii, and took a cruise to the Bahamas.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband: Gordon, Sheffield; daughter: Cindy (Mike) Nibaur, Willmar, Minn.; grandsons: Adam and Alec Nibaur. She is preceded in death by her parents. Retz Funeral Home.
