Jewell Haaland was born on March 28, 1910, in Dawson, Minnesota, to immigrant parents Solomon J. and Karen (Shefveland) Haaland. He was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Dawson and attended public school in Dawson. The family moved to Tyro Township in Yellow Medicine County and he attended country school in District 29. He was confirmed at Clarkfield Lutheran. Jewell graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1930 and attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa for one year. He then worked as a hired hand on farms in Normania and surrounding townships. In 1937 he started farming in Normania Township.
On December 24, 1937, he was united in marriage to Josie Hovdesven of Cottonwood at the parsonage by Rev. H. J. Madland. To this union two sons were born, Sheldon and Gary. He became a member of St. Lucas Lutheran Church and remained a member the rest of his life. Jewell was active in the community and church affairs and held offices in both. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Grain Terminal Association for 21 years, serving as chairman for five years. He was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the Federal Farm Credit Board for a six year term in 1979. In 1971 he retired from farming and moved to Clarkfield. He enjoyed music, sports, volunteer work for Prairie Five, and helping his son on the farm. He was active in farming until 1996 when he became ill. He entered the Clarkfield Care Center January 15 and passed away Tuesday, February 25 at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 28 days.
He is survived by his wife; son Sheldon and wife Margery of rural Hanley Falls; daughter-in-law, Lori of Arden Hills, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Amy and Allison of rural Hanley Falls and Dustin and Shari of Arden Hills and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Joseph, Elmer, Oswald, Oliver and Axel; sisters Clara Cunningham, Sina Cunningham, Marie Teig, Lenore Godwin and Helen Anderson; and son Gary in 1983.
