Robert "Bob" Bernard Haas

Robert Bernard "Bob" Haas, age 83, of Astoria, Oregon died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at home. He was born Aug. 18, 1927, in Renwick, Iowa, to Henry Albert and Rita (Ehrhardt) Haas. He was educated in Humboldt County, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy until 1946. On Aug. 25, 1948, he married Elizabeth Marie Klit. She survives, residing in Astoria. Mr. Haas came to Astoria with his family in 1957. He worked in the engine room of the Chessman ferry until the Astoria Bridge was completed. He then worked as a carpenter for Taggart Construction until his retirement. He was a member of Clatsop Post 12 American Legion and Carpenters Union Local No. 1707. Family members said he loved to fish and duck hunt, and enjoyed coffee with his friends at the Workers Tavern, where he was referred to as "Chairman of the Board." He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in baseball, football, basketball, soccer and water polo. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Judy Hauer and her husband, Bob, Elaine Williams and her companion, Danny Parker, and Melinda Johnson and her companion, Ted Warila, all of Astoria, and Rosie Dickinson and her husband, Gary, of Longview, Wash.; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Sarah Hauer of Renton, Wash., Marcus Hauer of South Royalton, Vt., Tricia Hauer of Portland, Tim and Alison Dickinson of Longview, and Donna and Pete Johansen, Matthew, David and Ryan Johnson and Tara Jones, all of Astoria; 10 great-grandchildren, Brittney, Chelsea and Raven Albee, AubreyAnn and Arabella Jones, Kinslee Ballard and Chase Johnson, all of Astoria, Annika and Rachel Hauer of Renton and Joel Dickinson of Longview; two sisters, Valeria Greene of Humboldt, Iowa, and Regina Rasmussen of Ames, Iowa; and a brother, Larry Haas of Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and Russell Haas. A celebration of life will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at the Labor Temple Diner and Bar, 934 Duane St. Private interment will be at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria. Memorial contributions may be made to the Astoria High School Athletic Department or Lower Columbia Hospice, in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
