AUSTIN, HOSELTON

January 2, 1834 -- January 13, 1912

John F. Austin was born [in Toronto Township, Peel County, Canada] near Toronto, Canada, January 2, 1834. About six years later his parents moved to Ogle county, Ill., where he grew to manhood. He attended Rock River Seminary for some time, after which he engaged in teaching school. In Sept 1861 he enlisted in the 8th Ill. Cavalry and as elected second lieutenant. His regiment was ordered to the eastern division and participated in the victories and defeats of the Peninsular campaign. In the fall of 1862 he resigned and returning home, assisted in recruiting the 17th Ill., Cavalry, and was elected captain of company ''M' of this regiment. This regiment was ordered to the western division where he served until January 1866, when he was discharged. February 1, 1866, he was united in marriage Delia Hoselton, of Payne Point, Ill., and immediately came to Iowa settling near Vinton, Benton county where he engaged in farming. In 1884 he moved to Wright county, and in 1889 he was elected representative in the state legislature and was re-elected in 1891 serving in the 23rd and 24th General Assemblies. In October 1906, he moved to Windom where he has since resided. He was a member of the Methodist Church. [Buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Windom, Minnesota]
