Beulah Mae Richardson was born July 9, 1917, in Wessington, SD, the daughter of Clarence Earl and Grace Violet (Kruse) Alger. She grew up in Wessington, graduating from Wessington Public High School, and later from Dakota Wesleyan University School of Nursing. Beulah was married to James McMahon on September 22, 1940, in Goldfield, Iowa. He was killed in action on June 12, 1944, serving his country during WWII. She worked as a nurse for Dr. Kretzmeyer at Kossuth County Hospital from 1938 to 1946. Beulah was married to Roy Richardson on December 11, 1949, in Des Moines. He preceded her in death on September 2, 1957. In 1958, she began working as a nurse for Algona Public Schools, retiring in the spring of 1979.
She enjoyed needlework, sewing, knitting, crocheting, working with plants, and refinishing old furniture. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, formerly Regular Baptist Church, since 1958. Beulah was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the American Nurses Association, and the National Education Association.
Beulah Mae Richardson died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at the Algona Manor Care Center at the age of 93. She had been a resident there since October 2004. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Virginia Richardson of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands James McMahon and Roy Richardson; two brothers, Oran Alger and Thoel Alger; a daughter, Mildred Black and her husband Robert; and two sons, Ray Richardson and Robert Richardson; and one grandson.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 20, at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church, Algona. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Algona. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
