Nellie, daughter of Peter S. and Dena (Kragt) Baker, was born September 13, 1907 on their farm near Kanawha, IA in Wright County. She attended the Rock Valley Christian Grade School, graduated and completed the normal training course at Rock Valley Public High School, and taught 6 years in country schools near Rock Valley. She married John Nobel on March 5, 1931 at the home of her parents in Rock Valley. Nellie and John settled on the farm 4 miles east of Rock Valley and later moved to a farm 2 ½ miles east of Rock Valley. Nellie was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church since she was 2 years old. She taught Sunday School and was a long time active member of the Martha Circle. After 20 years of marriage, her husband John died on January 24, 1952. She enjoyed having her children, grandchildren and their families visit and playing games. She also enjoyed flowers as well as gardening, knitting, and crocheting. Nellie cared for her invalid sister, Agnes Baker for many years after their mother’s death. Later Nellie spent the winters in Florida with Kay Jasper of Orange City, IA. Nellie died Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at her daughter’s home in Inwood. She was 98 years of age.

Left to cherish her memories is her son, Bernie (Helen) Nobel of La Belle, FL; 2 daughters, Dorothy (Leonard) Ver Hey of Lennox, SD, Jeanne (Case) Landegent of Inwood; 13 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; special foster daughter, Carol Postma of California; and close as-a-son, Al Bandstra of Pella, IA. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; brother, John Baker; sister, Agnes Baker; and an infant grandson.
