A. Hans Thompson --

Hans was born on April 3rd, 1922, on a farm north of Goldfield to Elmer M. and Selma Louise (Larson) Thompson. He attended country school and farmed on the family farm after his father’s death. He entered the U.S. Navy to serve his country in WWII, and was a member of the DAV. Hans married Mary D. Graves on July 12, 1947, at the Methodist Parsonage in Blue Earth Minnesota. They were blessed with three children: Linda, Carroll, and Kevin.

Hans worked at the Goldfield Creamery for 18 years and Custodian at the Goldfield High School for 11 years. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed attending the Goldfield High School Baseball and Basketball games. He especially loved spending time with his family. He was a great story teller and was quick with a one line joke. You would often hear him whistle a catchy tune or sing songs like the “Rambling Rose”. Gardening, canning, and wine making were just a few of his talents. He was the “Original Recycler and Mr. Fixit” He would save everything and turn it in to something useful or find that part no one else had. He enjoyed fishing and usually caught the big ones. Watching John Wayne movies, Iowa Hawkeye’s and Chicago Cubs were some of his night time favorites. Trains were one of his hobbies after working on the railroad.

Hans passed away on April 4th at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, at the age of 89 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; sisters, Grace Schmidgal and Deloris Holmes and daughter-in- law, Laura Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Mary of Goldfield; three children: Linda Ganzeveld (Stan) of Goldfield, Carroll Thompson (Julie) of Clarion and Kevin Thompson of Cupertino CA; seven grandchildren: Ernie (Stacey) Ganzeveld, Tracy Ganzeveld and Toby Goen, Bill (Lindsey) Ganzeveld, Jennifer (Greg) Johnson, Amanda Thompson, Bethany Thompson and Savannah Thompson; ten great–grandchildren: Brittany Strub, Andrew Strub, Whitney Johnson, Mckayla Johnson, Anisa Johnson, Emily Johnson, Katelyn Ganzeveld and Kylie Ganzeveld; sister, Shirley Rollefson of Forest City; brother, Richard Thompson (Bev) of Cottage Grove, MN; sister–in–law, Noreen Elberg of Eagle Grove and many cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous close friends.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday at Foust Funeral Home in Goldfield. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield, Sara Hill officiating; Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield. Memorials may be left at the discretion of the family.
