Terry L. Holmes, age 51, of Rowan, died Friday, March 18, 2011 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 22nd at the United Church of Rowan. Pastor Doug Holmes of the Sovereign Grace Church in Dows will officiate the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial will be held at Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.

Terry Lee Holmes was born August 21, 1959 in Hampton, the son of Charles "Chuck" Holmes and Leola Hackbarth. He grew up in the Rowan and Dows countryside. Terry was baptized and confirmed at the United Church of Rowan. He attended Sunday School in Rowan, but received his education at the Dows Community Schools. He graduated from Dows High School in 1977. He then attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge and Iowa State University in Ames. Terry graduated from ISU with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science in 1983. Terry then moved to Dallas, Texas for a short time where he worked in landscaping and turf management. He returned to the Dows/Rowan area in 1987 to farm with his family. Terry was united in marriage to Mary Miller on January 18, 1992, at the Little Brown church in Nashua. The couple made their home near Rowan where they raised their sons, Nathan and Justin.

Terry, or "Homer" as many referred to him, enjoyed several past-times throughout his life. Iowa State athletic events, particularly football and basketball. He enjoyed golfing, canoeing, and tinkering on small engines. Terry always had a small project in the works it seemed. He loved attending any athletic event his son, Nathan participated in and was an active members of the Iowa River Riders Snowmobiling Club. He loved to farm and enjoyed helping his brother, Tony with his farming operation. He also belonged to and helped lead Future Farmers of America, 4-H, and the Dows Sons of the Legion. He was also a member of the United Church of Rowan.

He is survived by his sons, Nathan of Clarion/Rowan and Justin Arteman of Cedar Falls; parents, Chuck and Leola of Dows; special friend Mary Miller of Clarion; sister, Sherry Clayton of Dows; three brothers, Doug Holmes and wife Carla of Latimer; Dennis Holmes of Dows; Tony Holmes and wife, Renee of Dows/Clarion; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great-nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Lee and Esther Hackbarth; paternal grandparents, Oscar and Ruth Holmes; brother-in-law, Bill Clayton, and great niece, Emma Olson.

Rowan man dies days after pickup rollover accident

ALEXANDER, IA — A Rowan man who was injured in a single vehicle accident south of Alexander around 2:30 a.m. Sunday has died. Terry Lee Holmes, 51, died on Friday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, according Dugger Funeral Home, Dows, which is handling funeral arrangements. The accident is also now listed as a fatality on the Iowa State Patrol’s accident report. According to the report Holmes was northbound on Balsam Avenue, just south of 130th Street, when he lost control of his 1998 Ford F-150 pick-up. The vehicle entered the east ditch and then rolled at least three times before coming to rest on its wheels in a field. Holmes was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the Iowa State Patrol. He was initially taken to Franklin General Hospital in Hampton for treatment.
