OLD SETTLER DIES
Henry Mullong Was Among Early Homesteaders in Plymouth County
Henry Mullong, a pioneer settler, of Plymouth county, died Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Michael Allway, at Eagle Grove, Iowa. Death was caused by old age and pneumonia, which set in ten days before his death. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Eagle Grove, Monday morning. Following the services the body was brought to Le Mars for interment and burial services were held at St. Joseph's cemetery. His wife, who preceded him in death twenty-two years, is buried here.
Henry Mullong was born in 1851 at Luxembourg. He came to the United States at the age of 19, and for some time worked as a tailor. Fifty-eight years ago, he took up a homestead in Plymouth county, seven miles southeast of Remsen, and lived there for many years. He suffered all the hardships of the early pioneer, when his entire crop of grain was destroyed by prairie fire. Twice the grasshoppers swept over and devastated his land. Twenty-two years ago he left the farm and went to Winona, Minn., where he lived for seventeen years. From there he went to Sioux City and two years ago to Eagle Grove where he has been living with his daughter.
He leaves six children to mourn his loss. Mrs. Mike Allway, Eagle Grove; Mrs. George Dorothy, Mrs. Lou Weber, Peter Mullong, all of Sioux City, and Dr. C.R. Mullong, of Norfolk, Neb. The children were present at the except John and Mrs. Lou Weber, who were unable to come due to sickness. Mr. Mullong, being an old pioneer of Plymouth County, had many friends and acquaintances in this vicinity, who join the family in his death.
