August 20, 1923 -- August 18, 1997

YUMA, Ariz. -- Clyde C. Smedley, 73, died in Yuma, Ariz., on Aug. 18, 1997, of a heart attack. The body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Clyde Smedley, the son of Milton and Louisa (Curtis) Smedley, was born Aug. 20, 1923. He grew up around Mason City, Iowa, and graduated from Mason City High School in 1942. After his parents' death, he lived with his sister, Reba Miller and her family, near Belmond, Iowa, for two years, then he moved to Montana where he attended college and became a math teacher. In 1954, he married Donna Lee Ruetten. They moved to Ely, Nev., where he taught school in Ely and nearby towns for about 20 years. They retired to Yuma, Ariz., where they have lived until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Donna of Yuma; and one daughter, Charlene and her husband, Larry Stillion and grandson, Jared, of Rock Springs, Wyo. He is also survived by four sisters, Ruth Auck, of Nora Springs, Iowa; Lettie Bucalstein, La Habra, Calif.; Alice Cogill, of Mason City, Iowa; and Reba Miller, of Belmond, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; his parents; and three brothers, Vern, Art and Joe Smedley.
