Boyd Elliott, 49, of Haverhill, Iowa died Tuesday, February 8, at the Iowa River Hospice House after a two year battle with ALS. His death came peacefully in the afternoon with his loving family at his side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 12, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church with Father Don Czapla officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery with a fireman’s procession to gravesite. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. with vigil at 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the ALS Foundation, Central Iowa Division of Sea Cadets or Iowa River Hospice. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Boyd and his family.

Born on October 9, 1961, in Belmond, Iowa, he was the son of Russell Jay and Audrey (Nelson) Elliott. He graduated from the South Tama High School in 1980 and later from DMACC with his degree in architecture. On August 10, 1985, Boyd was united in marriage to Karen Yuska at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tama. They made their home in the Marshalltown area and later Haverhill. Boyd was employed for over 20 years with the Marshalltown Fire Department and previously worked for Fareway in Tama, Wal-Mart and the Hy-Vee Drug Store.

Boyd, also known as the “Boydster” was a faithful member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church, the Sea Cadets, Haverhill Volunteer Fire Department, Tama Fire Department, and Haverhill City Council and served as an officer in the International Association of Fire Fighters # FF16. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, being able to work with his hands and doing woodworking, being a band-booster and treasured time with his family, especially gearing his life around his boys’ activities.

He will be greatly missed by many. Left to cherish his memory are Karen, his loving wife of 25 years, his sons: Kyle Elliott of Haverhill and Drew Elliott (fiancée Rebecca Norton) currently serving in the US Navy in Guam, his mother Audrey of Tama, brother Kevin (Deena) Elliott of Kerrville, Texas and sister Jodi (Marc) Walker of Prattville, Alabama, his nieces and nephews and his brothers and sisters of firefighting as well as many, many friends. In death, Boyd rejoined his father. May God grant mercy on his soul.
