William Delmer Scott was born June 11, 1928, in Garner, Iowa, son of Mildred and Gabe Scott, and died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, in Melbourne, Fla. Bill lived the first five years of his life with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Reimer. Bill completed the eighth grade at Kanawha, Iowa Schools. At age 15, Bill lived in Mason City and worked at a gas station with Kenny Olson, who later died in the Philippines. Bill served in the Merchant mariners from December 1944 through May 1945, being discharged one month before his 17th birthday. Bill served in the North Atlantic transporting German prisoners to Antwerp, Belgium.

Bill married Ruth Francis Schott on Oct. 25, 1947, in Rolfe, Iowa. Children born to this union are Linda J. Wright of Peosta, Iowa, William D. Scott II of Pennsylvania, Nick Scott of Cedar Rapids, Lana Jobes of Palm Bay, Fla., Lari Jo Neibert of Waubeek, Iowa, Greg Scott of Chicago and Cindy Light of Lisbon. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; a half brother, Gerald Diebler; and half sister, Mary Diebler.

Bill retired after 35 years with Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. Bill was a 50+ year member of IBEW. Bill lived in Linn County for over 50 years. Bill was a member of the I Club of Iowa City, Hawk Club and Hawkeye Area Wrestling Club. Bill was an avid wrestling fan, following the Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling team all around the country to Big 10 meets and the Nationals. Bill was a member of the Brevard Veterans Council, Merritt Island, Fla. Bill was a member of Disabled American Veterans, AMVETS, Marion American Legion and a life member of VFW.

Bill was active in local Iowa Republican politics. Bill was a former member of the Republican State Central Committee and the Linn County Central Committee. Bill was an alternate delegate to the 1976 GOP National Convention in Kansas City and a delegate to the 1980 GOP National Convention in Detroit. Bill ran unsuccessfully for the Iowa State Legislature in 1982. Bill loved jazz music, gardening and Ronald Reagan.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Cedar Rapids. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
