Steven [Stephen] R. Purse was born at Albion, N.Y., in 1821. In 1847 he was married to Miss Betsy C. Miller. To this union three children were born, Mrs. Roe, Mr. George Purse and Mrs. A. B. Nelson of Galt. Mrs. Roe preceded her father to the better world. Last Saturday morning Mr. Purse was seized with a severe pain in his side and a physician was called. Later in the morning he passed away. He leaves besides the two children already mentioned the wife of his youth who has been his constant companion and help meet through a long life of usefulness. Mr. Purse has always been a strong hard working man and has supplied vegetables and fruits for many a table of the town. Early in life he united with the Congregational church and retained his membership in this church while residing in New York. He moved to Wright county, Iowa, in 1881, and to Grinnell six years later. He has been a kind husband, father and friend, a good neighbor and citizen. The funeral was conducted yesterday forenoon by Prof. L. F. Parker. Those present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Roe of New Sharon, Mr. George Purse and Mrs. A. B. Nelson of Galt.
