DAKOTA CITY, IA - Betty J. Johnson, 86, of Dakota City, passed away January 10, 2011 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt with a VFW Auxiliary Memorial Service at 5:00.

Betty is survived by her husband, Wayne T. Johnson of Dakota City; sons, Steven N. (Rose) Samuels of Humboldt, Bret A. (Faith) Johnson of Cameron, MO, and Dr. Todd C. (Dr. Noel) Johnson of Heath, TX; grandchildren, Michael L. (Lori) Samuels, Christian Johnson, Brett A. Johnson II, Nicole M. Johnson, and Chloe Johnson; great-granddaughter, Zoe M. Samuels; and her sister, Ethel Palmeter of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Michael; son, Dr. Thomas Samuels; brothers, Jens, Harry, and Ted Simons; and sisters, Anna Kjar, Edna Johnson, and Ida Hansen.

Betty Jean Simonsen, the daughter of Peter and Julia Simonsen, was born June 27, 1924 on the family farm near Rutland, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1942. Betty received her Teaching Degree from Eagle Grove Community College and taught in the South Airline Country School in Humboldt County until 1958. She married Neal Samuels and the marriage was later dissolved. On February 3, 1956, she was united in marriage to Wayne T. Johnson at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Humboldt. The couple made their home in Humboldt and Dakota City where Betty took great joy in caring for her family. Betty was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and was active in the E.L.C.W. She enjoyed baking, bowling, card playing, and dominating Scrabble Games. She also loved to teach her grandchildren Danish and her family will always remember her as a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
