August 20, 1930 - December 25, 2010

Virgil Stanley Whipple, 80, of Hampton, passed away on December 25, 2010, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa, of cancer. Virgil was born August 20, 1930, in Hardin County, Iowa, to Gerald Whipple and Vera (Davis) Whipple. Virgil was married to Echo Elaine Enabnit on August 10, 1952, in Swaledale, Iowa, for 35 years, where Virgil spent time coaching his son's athletic events and attending his children's activities. He and Echo enjoyed taking many family vacations. Echo passed away April 20, 1987, of cancer. Virgil married Shirley Lorraine (Young) Miller on February 17, 1990, in Newton, Iowa. On September 30, 1947, Virgil enlisted into the United States Army at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. On September 6, 1950, he was wounded in Korea with shrapnel in the neck. He received several medals, including the Purple Heart. He was discharged from the United States Army at Fort Riley, Kansas on September 29, 1951. He then farmed and drove semi. Virgil started working at the Maytag Company in Hampton, Iowa, in June of 1962, retiring June 1, 1992. Between October of 1992 and September of 1999, Virgil and Shirley delivered Winnebago motor homes from Forest City, Iowa, all over the United States and Canada each driving one. Virgil and Shirley spent lot of time camping with family and friends, one of the favorite spots was Threshers. October 1999, he began driving the Ultra Sound machine from Franklin General Hospital, going to Belmond, Britt and Forest City, Iowa. Virgil was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hampton, Iowa. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the Hampton Senior Center.

Virgil is survived by his wife Shirley, nine children, Rose (Jim) Fuller, Arnold Whipple, and Phyllis (Brent) Bjelland of Marshalltown, Iowa, Denise (Mark) Hartnett, Teresa (Dennis) Kriegel, Williamsburg, Iowa, Lynn (Joan) Whipple, Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Earl (Sue) Whipple, Norwalk, Iowa, Colleen (Steve) Stone, Brian (Kayda) Whipple, Erie, Colorado, four step children, Ranay (Mike) Hunst, Marshalltown, Iowa, Connie (Jim) Evans, Hampton, Iowa, Georgia (Dale) Allen, Aredale, Iowa, Russell (Tammy) Miller, Rockwell, Iowa. Thirteen grandchildren, thirteen step grandchildren, two great grandchildren, eight step great grandchildren, brothers Wilber (Doris) Whipple, Hampton, Iowa, Merle (Mary Ann) Whipple, Geneva, Iowa, Roscoe (Carolyn) Whipple, Verle (Norma) Whipple, several nieces and nephews and a lot of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife Echo, his parents, brother Lorenzo (Bud) Whipple, sister Lenora (Sis) Conrad, granddaughter Ashlyn Whipple in August 2008 and a step grandson Nicholas Miller in 2006. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hampton Senior Center. Burial will be in the North Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Iowa Falls, Iowa.
