Melvin L. Haugland, the son of Arthur and Olive (Reed) Haugland, was born December 15, 1933, on a farm west of Goldfield, in Humboldt County, Iowa. He graduated from Renwick High School in 1951 and was drafted into the United States Army on December 9, 1953. On June 22, 1956, Mel was united in marriage to Janis Baker at the United Methodist Church in Renwick.
Mel worked for the Renwick Times Newspaper and the Eagle Grove Eagle for over 50 years in the printing department. He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church and Bower Lodge 464 in Eagle Grove. Mel loved gardening and the outdoors, collecting coins, stamps and tools.
Mel passed away Saturday, December 25, 2010, at his home, with his family by his side, in Eagle Grove at the age 77 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Robert and a half-sister, Beverly Hansen. Survivors include his wife Janis of Eagle Grove; three children, Leisa Haugland and Douglas Sandven of Humboldt, Lanette Arne and Randy of Ames and Steven Haugland and Amy of Eagle Grove; grandchildren, Brian Bromley and Amanda of Eagle Grove, Michael Baker and Kirsten of Washburn, Stephanie Arne of Australia, Ryan Arne of Minneapolis, MN, Michelle Haugland, Ashley Haugland and Sydney Haugland, all of Eagle Grove; great grandchildren, Kateryn Bromley, Nolan Bromley, Isabelle Baker, Natalie Baker and Owen Baker; brothers, Eugene Haugland and Della of Mesa, AZ, and Myron Haugland and Margaret of Humboldt; sister, Shirley Fisher and Gene of Geneseo, IL; half-brother, Arthur "Bud" Haugland and JoAnn of Spencer and a half brother-in-law, Terry Hansen of Brewster, MN.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, December 30, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
