Harlan W. Barnes died at University hospital here [Iowa City] Saturday afternoon following a week's illness. Doctors said death was due to cerebral thrombosis. Barnes was a delegate to the Republican national convention in 1940. The Iowa Press association in 1938 honored him as a "master editor."
Born in 1883 on a farm near Fedora, S. D., Barnes moved with his family when 13 to Eagle Grove where his father had bought the Eagle. He was graduated from the University of Iowa in 1907 and taught school at Burlington and Cedar Rapids before returning to Eagle Grove.
He is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. William Baxter of Middletown, Ohio; and a son, Arthur M. Barnes of the University of Iowa journalism faculty.
