SERVICES HELD FOR LEWIS M. MECHEM

Lewis Morton Mechem was born Oct. 10, 1901 in Clarion, Iowa, the son of George L. and Jessie Morton Mechem. Lewis spent most of his life in or near Clarion, having graduated from Clarion High School. He was united in marriage on November 23, 1925 to Vernice Allen. For 12 years, they farmed in the community and in 1938 moved to Clarion. Most of the following years he was employed by the city until he was stricken with a heart condition in August of 1961. He accepted the limitations of health in a manner which was an inspiration to his friends and family and continued his active involvement in civic affairs and, in 1966, served as treasurer of the Centennial committee. He was an active Methodist laymen and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

He passed away at his home Monday, April 11, 1966. He is survived by his wife, Vernice; 5 sons, Allen, George and David of Clarion, John of Des Moines and Paul of Naples, Italy , three daughters: Mary Carlson of Flagstaff, Arizona; Marjorie Stofferan of Paulina, Iowa, and Ruth, a student nurse at Rochester, Minn; one sister, Mrs. Clifford Goslin of Fort Dodge, IA., fifteen grandchildren and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mrs. Harold Hoyt.

Funeral services were held Thursday at the Methodist Church, Rev. Charles Haigh officiating. Mel Roble, Duane Sandage, Roger Sumners, Bob Blecker, E. C. (Bud) Hanson and Merlyn Didio, acted as pallbearers. Interment was in the Clarion Evergreen Cemetery.
