Leland Charles Dorr, was born in a La Crosse, Wis., hospital (the family was living in De Soto, Wis., at the time) on Aug. 29, 1918, to George and Luella (Anderson) Dorr. He moved with the family at an early age to southwestern Minnesota; they lived near Hendricks, Minn., and Tauton. Leland was baptized in Wisconsin and confirmed at Marble Lutheran Church near Canby in 1933. He received his education in Minnesota before the family moved to Belmond in 1934, where they engaged in farming. Leland was a lifelong farmer who enjoyed raising crops and livestock. He was very mechanically minded and was able to adapt household appliances and other farm machines to electricity when electricity became available to the rural areas in the late 1930s. He always enjoyed his workshop and spent many hours creating things with his loving hands.

He was united in marriage to Adean (Mehus) Johnson on Aug. 10, 1957. They continued to farm southwest of Belmond until they retired in 1980 and moved into Belmond. He was a longtime member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he had served as a deacon, a trustee and in various other capacities. Leland was a man who enjoyed the fruit of his hard work, his family and his friends. He was a gentleman to all who may have crossed his tale of life. In earlier years of their marriage Leland and Adean enjoyed many trips in their pickup camper to Florida, Texas, Arizona, California and Canada. In 1968 they drove the Alcan Highway to Alaska for a month’s vacation.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Adean, Belmond; his daughter Luann Johnson (Bob Emley), Des Moines; his son, Kent Johnson (Cathy) of Pilager, Minn.; his grandchildren, Angela (Craig) Oestreich of Silver Lake, Minn., Aimee (Chris) Lunde of Ames, Eric (Julia) Emley of Des Moines and Second Lt. Alex Emley of Montgomery, Ala.; and his great-grandchildren, Kyle and Alex Oestreich of Silver Lake, Minn., and Quentin Reiner, Connor and Brennan Lunde of Ames. Also, his niece, Marlene Wessels of Goodell; two great-nieces, Wanda (David) Basener, Belmond, and Linda (Steve) Schrage, Cornelia; and a great-nephew, John (Tammy) Wessels, Belmond. Leland was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Russell; a sister-in-law, Maxine; a sister, Evelyn, in infancy; and a nephew, Donald Wessels. Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond, Iowa.
