Stoughton, WI -- Ursula (Sula) M. Thomas, age 94, of Stoughton died peacefully on Sept. 9, 2010, at Country Comforts in Cambridge with family and friends by her side. Ursula was born on May 13, 1916, to Dr. Rollin and Minnie (Eldridge) Thomas, in Klemme, Iowa. Sula obtained her Bachelor of Arts from Iowa State, master's in physiology from UW-Madison, along with her Ph.D. She became a Professor Emeritus in the University of Wisconsin's Department of German. While teaching she also wrote many text books. Sula honed her German skills by traveling to Germany many times with her dog, Hex. Once retired, she traveled the world to places like Australia and Greece, among seeing family throughout the Untied States. When home, she donated her time to Meals on Wheels, raised show dogs, joined knitting groups and crocheted lap robes for patients. Sula donated much of her resources to helping others in need, one true passion she had was taking care of children overseas through the ChildFund International. She would sponsor several children at one time with donations and letters.

Sula grew up the oldest of four girls. Her sisters, Betty Thomas died as a toddler and Ruth Ferry died in Cambridge in 1967, at age 37. Her remaining sister, Margaret Loewen, resides in North Carolina. Sula leaves behind nieces, Cheryl Smith of Cambridge and Rita Grubb of North Carolina; nephews, John Allen of Madison and Rollie Loewen of Illinois; great-nieces and great-nephews, Annessa MacTaggert, Chris Grubb, along with Brian, Brad, Brett, Brent, Bart and Angie Loewen; not to mention all the great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Sula also leaves behind a special friend and travel companion, Alaine Johnson of Stoughton.

An Open House is planned in honor of Sula on Monday, Oct. 17, 2010, at the WHISPERING WINDS RETREAT, located at 201 Highland Drive in Cambridge, from 1 p.m until 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ChildFund International or University of Wisconsin-Madison. A special thanks to Mim and Marion at Country Comforts and Dr. George Gay for making Sula's remaining time comfortable. Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care.
