Funeral services for Hurshel L. Earles, age 91, of Osage, Iowa, were held on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with Rev. Dr. J. Samuel Subramanian officiating. Burial was in the Little Cedar Cemetery in Little Cedar, Iowa. Hurshel died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at MCRHC-Hospice Unit in Osage.
Hurshel was born August 13, 1915 in Corwith, Iowa, the son of John L. and Amizon (Dunfee) Earles. Hurshel farmed near Crystal Lake, Lime Springs, and Osage. He moved to Osage in 1966 and worked at Osage Cemetery, Farmer's Produce, and was custodian at the Home Trust and Savings Bank before retiring. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage and the Osage Senior Center. He delivered Meals on Wheels until he turned 90. He earned recognition from the Iowa State governor for his volunteer services. He enjoyed gardening and making wooden crafts.
Hurshel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ruth in 2001; by brothers: Willis, Harlow, Burkley, John, and James; by sisters: Sylvia Kearney, Murre Fillenworth, and Estle Earles; by son Richard Earles, by daughter Marjorie Earles, and by a granddaughter, Sheri Earles. Hurshel is survived by three daughters: Betty Norrie of Rochester, Minn., Susan (John) Campbell of Harlan, Linda (Paul) Dawson of Newton; by three sons, Jerry (Mary Ellen) Earles of Independence, Keith (Carol) Earles of Traer, Steven Earles of Clear Lake; by a sister, Nona Van Dusseldorp of Britt; by 13 grand-children and by 14 great-grandchildren. Arrangements made by Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, Iowa.
