Donald Corlew, 81, was retired contractor Date of Death 08/22/2002; Former Staten Islander Donald W. Corlew, 81, of Edison, N.J., a retired contractor, died yesterday at home. Born in Essex, Mo., he was taken to Corwith, Iowa, as a young child. He moved to Staten Island in 1950, living first in the Fox Hills section of Clifton before moving to Tottenville in 1954. He relocated to Edison in 1965. Mr. Corlew worked as a self-employed contractor for more than 50 years, specializing in home additions and brickwork, until retiring in 1990. He was also an avid woodworker who enjoyed making banks and tops for each of his grandchildren, as well as bookcases. Mr. Corlew served in the Navy during World War II, working his way up from boatswain's mate first class to chief aboard the USS Dorothea L. Dix. The ship supplied troops and ammunition for six major invasions, including the D-Day assault on Normandy.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Doris Pedersen; his son, Donald; his four daughters, Donna Hernandez, Sharon Luethi, Michelle Burton and Lisa Steinberg; a brother, Lawson; three sisters, Marilyn King, Faye Abbas and Kristen Corlew; 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be tomorrow from the Mitruska Funeral Home, Fords, N.J., with a service at 10:30 a.m. in Evangelistic Centre Church, Rahway, N.J. Entombment will be in Woodbridge (N.J.) Memorial Gardens mausoleum.
