Amy M. Tingley, a retired school teacher and veteran of the Army in World War II, died April 25 at a Ukiah care home. She was 96. Born Sept. 6, 1901, in Corwith, Iowa, she lived in Sonoma and Mendocino counties for more than 40 years. Before coming to California, she taught school in Iowa for about 20 years. In 1942 she joined the Army, where she drove trucks and did clerical work. She earned the rank of sergeant by the time she left the service in 1946.
In 1956 she married Merritt Earl Tingley, recalled her stepson, Roy Tingley of Ukiah. The couple lived on a ranch on Laguna Road west of Santa Rosa. In 1971 they moved to Santa Rosa and in 1984 to Ukiah. Mr. Tingley died in 1994. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Ukiah Saturday Afternoon Club and the Santa Rosa United Congregational Church.
Besides her stepson, she is survived by her other stepchildren, Joann McGuiggan of St. Mary's, W. Va., Marion McKay of Vallejo and Charles Tingley of Big Spring, Texas; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
At her request, no services will be held. Burial will be at her family's plot in Corwith, Iowa. The family prefers memorial donations to the Ukiah Senior Center. Arrangements were under the direction of Eversole Mortuary.
