February 23, 1846 -- December 21, 1921

Manuel Wallin, son of Pierson and Susan Wallin, was born near the town of Pataskala, Licking county, Ohio, on February 23, 1846. His mother died when he was a baby ten months old. When seven years of age he came to Iowa with his father and located in Marshall county. Marshalltown at that time had but five houses and Mr. Wallin witnessed the wonderful development of the region. He received his schooling in the pioneer schools of Marshall county, and grew up on the homestead farm, assisting his father in the difficult task of bringing the place under cultivation. When 18 years of age, he enlisted as a soldier in the Union army for service during the civil war, and served in Co. G, 44th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, for a period of five months, being mustered out in October, 1864. During this period of service his regiment was on guard duty in Tennessee and Mississippi. Upon returning home, he resumed his farm duties and on October 8, 1865, Mr. Wallin was united in marriage to Isabelle Spurlin, moving to Wright county in 1868, where he improved 490 acres of land. In 1895 he sold his farm and moved to Woolstock, where he conducted a general merchandise store for eight years, after which he retired from active business and in 1911 moved to Eagle Grove, living in comfort until the time of his death, which occurred at 1:30 A. M., December 20, 1921, making him 75 years, 9 months and 27 days old.

To Manuel and Isabelle Wallin seven children were born, four sons and three daughters. Three sons, George, Norris and Frank Wallin, preceded him to the great beyond. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, one son, and three daughters: Earle L. Wallin, Mrs. Ida Boughton, Mrs. Rose Woodard, all of Eagle Grove, and Mrs. Maude Hirt of Woolstock, Iowa,; also 18 grandchildren and four half brothers, four half sisters, besides other relatives and many friends.

Mr. Wallin was a member of G. A. R. Post of Eagle Grove, in which he took active part. He was a member of the Methodist church of Woolstock and his family was reared in that faith.

Manuel Wallen Died at His Home in This City Tuesday Morning at 1:30

Manuel Wallen is dead. He passed away at his home on South Comercial avenue early Tuesday morning. He was a Civil Was veteran. He was a pioneer in Wright county. He was a successful farmer, a successful business man in Woolstock, and since 1911 has been a respected and loved citizen of Eagle Grove.

Mr. Wallen was born in Licking county, Ohio, February 23rd, 1846. When he was eighteen years of age he enlisted in Company G, 44th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. After his honorable discharge he returned to Marshalltown and rented a farm and came to Wright county in 1868. On October 8, 1865, he was united in marriage with Isabelle Spurlin and to this union seven children were born, namely: Mrs. Ida Belle Boughton, Mrs. Rose Ann Woodard, Frank Albert Wallen (deceased), Norris E. Wallen (deceased), George E. Wallen (deceased), Mrs. Maude Mae Hirt, and Earl L. Wallen. All live in Eagle Grove except Mrs. Hirt, who lives at Woolstock.

In the fall of 1895, Mr. Wallen sold his farm holdings in Troy township, about 400 acres, and bought the general store at Woolstock. In 1911 he built the present home in Eagle Grove and lived there in comfortable retirement until his death. The funeral services will be held at the home this Thursday afternoon at 1:30 and the interment in Rose Hill cemetery.
