Maxine L. Helland, age 87, of Emmons, Minnesota, died Thursday, August 19, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, Minnesota, with Pastor Julie Fiske officiating. Burial will be in Lime Creek Stateline Cemetery, rural Emmons. Visitation will be on Monday, August 23, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice.

Maxine Lorraine (Hacker) Helland was born on October 12, 1922, at Eagle Grove, Iowa, to parents Max and Mable (Johnson) Hacker. She attended and graduated from Emmons High School in 1941. On April 4, 1944, Maxine was united in marriage with Lester B. Helland at Lime Creek Lutheran Church in rural Emmons. The couple made Emmons their home, raising four daughters, and enjoying everything there is about small town living. Maxine was employed by St. John’s Lutheran Home for 30 years as the dining room hostess. She was a member of Emmons Lutheran Church where she kept active with the Hannah/Priscilla Circle. Maxine was a member of the Emmons American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed time playing bingo, reading, crocheting, dancing, and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Grandma Helland loved making lefse for her grandkids and always provided her lefse making talents for the annual Lutefisk Supper at the Emmons Church.

Maxine cherished time with her family, especially the mother-daughter travels, and bus trips with dear friends. Survivors include her four daughters, Judy (Art) Gambell of Forest City, IA, Sally (Gary) Bohm of Waseca, MN, Cathy (John) Nelson of Emmons, MN, and Peggy (Lynn) Honsey of Winona, MN; nine grandchildren, Michael (Diane) Lund, Jeffrey Lund, Gary Lund, Nathan (Cassy) Gambell, Jennifer (Shawn) Hermanson, Kristen (John) Moehring, Dale (Bridget Kennedy) Honsey, Katey (Bret) Wadewitz, and Kyle (Kady Lindquist) Honsey; two step-grandchildren, Jessica Springer and Michael (April) Gambell; six great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Chase, and Jacob Gambell, Ellie Moehring, and Mason and Cora Wadewitz; and two step-great-grandchildren, Jayden Springer and Faith Gambell. Maxine is also survived by her brothers and sister, Carl (Elsie) Hacker of Emmons, MN, Edythe Thompson of Twin Lakes, MN, Raymond (Marlys) Hacker of Emmons, MN, Robert Hacker of Albert Lea, MN, and Gordon (Jeanne) Hacker of Emmons, MN; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester in 1978; and brothers and sister, Albert (Helen) Hacker, Frank (Bette) Hacker, Andrew (Darlene) Hacker, Myrtle (Maurice) Spires, Duane Thompson, and Mary Hacker.
