The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona
February 3, 2003Betty K. DeLano
She was born to July 21, 1931 in Eagle Grove, Iowa, to Eugene and Dorothy Kist. Her birth mother died in October of that year. Betty lived with her maternal grandmother in Arkansas for four years and was then sent to live with her parents in Renwick, Iowa. She attended the public schools there and was confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She married Herbert M. DeLano in 1948. They lived in various small Iowa towns. After her children were in school, Betty took the GED test and when her scores were the first accepted by the Iowa State Board of Nursing, she entered the ADN program at Iowa Central Community College in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, and received her RN in 1969. After working in the geriatric field, including teaching certified nursing aid classes for ICCC, she then entered the Civil Service Corps and worked in Indian Health services on the Navajo, Zuni and White Mountain Apache Reservations. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Open Bible in Whiteriver. She had suffered ill health for 20 years, so death was a welcome stranger to her soul.
Betty is survived by her husband of 53 years, Herb. Sr.; four daughters; four sons; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by six half brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by her four parents.
At her request there will be immediate cremation and no formal services. Any memorials may be sent to the Whiteriver Church of the Open Bible or to East Fork Lutheran Mission Schools. Owens Mortuary of Show Low handled the arrangements.
