Helen C. Hanson, 99, Nurse, teacher & Lifelong learner

Helen Hanson was born February 21, 1911, on the family farm in Troy Township, Eagle Grove, Iowa, the second of four children of Gerhard Severin and Sunniva Borge Hanson. Helen attended the Eagle Grove schools, graduating with the Class of 1927. She attended Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and taught for several years in Story City, Iowa. One of her ambitions was to become a nurse, so she attended the School of Nursing at the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. Helen spent six years as a Public Health Nurse in Winona and Rochester, Minn. She then attended Columbia University in New York, NY, and earned her MA Degree. She returned to teach Nursing for 25 years, six at the University of Minnesota and 19 at St. Olaf College in Northfield. She retired in 1974 and moved to El Paso, Texas. Helen continued to “study” and “learn” in various fields. She was a “World Traveler” and a Lifelong Learner." In 1989, Helen moved to Laguna Woods in Southern California, and continued “learning” and becoming involved in community organizations.

Helen Hanson died on February 28, 2010, at the age of 99. Helen is survived by one brother, Kermit; eight nieces and nephews and their families; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Hanson of Eagle Grove. A Memorial for Helen was held April 10, 2010 at the home of Kermit Hanson in Seattle, Wash.
