Virginia was born on May 10, 1923, in Clarion, the daughter of George Francis and Anna Mae (Thul) Harris. She was a 1942 graduate of Holy Family High School and a 1945 graduate of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, both in Mason City. She met her husband, Herman while working at Mercy Hospital and they were married on Dec. 26, 1947, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Virginia was proud to be a registered nurse, but also took great joy from helping her husband on the farm for many years. She had also been the director of nursing at Nora Springs. She resided in Mason City since the late 1960s. She was a member of the Retired Nurses Association, the Aqua Belles Swim Group, Holy Family Catholic Church, and she worked in the Community Kitchen. Virginia loved to travel and had been to Canada and every state in the United States (except Hawaii). She had a collection of cups from everywhere she and her husband had traveled. She also liked to garden and was an avid reader of western novels, especially Louis L’Amour. In her younger years, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and quilting. Virginia was also a very good cook.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Genevieve Saddoris; and brothers, John, Charles and George Harris. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Herman; sons, Stephen (Linda) Nannenga of Dubuque, Charles (Marlys) Nannenga of Clarksville, and David Nannenga of Willis, Texas; grandchildren, Rachel, Bryce, Bryan, Erik, Cathy and Jon; and great grandchildren, Brayden, Bela and Lila.
