OWATONNA, MN — Herbert Fetrow, 95, of Owatonna, passed away Monday, July 26, 2010, at Clare Bridge-Alzheimer and Dementia Care of Owatonna. Herb was born in Belmond, Iowa, June 1, 1915, to Ben and Nina Fetrow. He graduated from Belmond HS and Dubuque University where he was an outstanding athlete. In 1991, Herb was inducted into the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame at Dubuque as a four year letter winner in football and track (1934-1938). He taught and coached in Montour, Iowa where he met his wife, Jean, and they were married on June 1, 1941. Herb was a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II. Returning from the war he and his wife owned several businesses in Toledo, Iowa. In 1957, they returned to teaching in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Herb taught junior high English and was an avid sports fan. He was a Lions Club member and American Legion member for many years. In 1977, they retired from teaching and moved to Belen, N.M. where Herb and his wife enjoyed 30 years of golf and travel. In 2006, they made their home in Owatonna at The Brooks Assisted Living and during the last year at Clare Bridge of Owatonna.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his parents; his brother, Robert Fetrow; his sister, Adele Johnson; and granddaughter, Stephanie Peach. He is survived and sadly missed by daughters, Kay Recker (Dennis) of Madison, Miss., and Barb Peach of Owatonna; grandson, Anthony Empting of Mililani, Hawaii; granddaughter Cassandra Ringhofer (Jason) of Owatonna; and five great-grandchildren, Kirra and Emma Empting and Logan, Dawson, and Alexis Ringhofer; sister, Jean McNulty, Des Moines, Iowa; and brother, George Fetrow, Belen, N.M.

Herb asked that his body be donated to the Mayo Clinic for clinical studies and no services are planned. Memorials are preferred to the North Iowa Scholarship Fund do Brad Huntington, 111 NW 3rd Ave., Buffalo Center, Iowa 50424.
