SHEFFIELD, IA -- Doris Peter, 85, of Sheffield, died Wednesday (Dec. 4, 1996) at her home in Sheffield. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Beard officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Doris Peter was born on March 17, 1911, on her parent's farm in Franklin County, the daughter of Otto and Bertha (Harris) Thomas. She attended country schools in both Franklin and Cerro Gordo counties. Following school, she worked at Ward's Cafe until becoming united in marriage to Lavine Peter on Jan. 17, 1931, in the Little Brown Church, Nashua. They made their home on the family farm southwest of Sheffield where she worked beside her husband until 1966 when they purchased a home and moved into Sheffield. Doris enjoyed doing hand quilting, gardening, canning, cooking and baking her grandchildren's favorite things, playing games (Flinch and Authors) with her children and grandchildren. Fond memories are recalled when thoughts are turned to gathering eggs and dressing chickens with grandma. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sheffield and its United Methodist Women's group.

She is survived by her daughter, Marlys Pals and her husband, Nathan, of Meservey; one son, Cecil Peter and his wife, Mary, of Sheffield; six grandchildren, Doug Peter and his wife, Karla, of Sheffield; Julie Wiemann and her husband, Chuck of Des Moines; Gary Peter and his wife, Suzanne, of Urbandale; Mary Jo Koenigsberg and her husband, Brad, of Sheffield; Lori Stalker and her husband, Tom, of Mason City; and Ryan Pals of Meservey; 16 great-grandchildren, Angie, Stacie, Haylie, Brittaney, Tanner, Nicole, Christopher, Jillian, Chelsea, Whitney, Mickenzie, Bob, Rachael, Peter, T.J. and Sarah; one sister-in-law, Thelma Ziesman of Sheffield; and one brother-in-law, Mike Hudson of Sheffield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lavine, in 1986; her parents, Otto and Bertha Thomas; one sister, Ione Hudson; and one brother-in-law, Clifford Thomas.
