BELMOND, IA — Mildred D. "Millie" Smit, 76, passed away Saturday (April 18, 1998) at the Belmond Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Reformed Church with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Millie, the daughter of Charles and Anna Thompson Anderson, was born Sept. 5, 1921, near Clarion. She attended country schools in the area. She was united in marriage on Oct. 5, 1939, with Dick Carl Smit. The couple made their home near Belmond. Millie helped raise her brothers and sisters after her mother's death. She worked for a time at the Belmond Drive-In. After the death of her husband in 1982, Millie moved into Belmond. She loved to spend her time with her grandchildren. They were very important to her. Millie also enjoyed doing needlepoint and quilting, making a quilt for each grandchild. She enjoyed cooking and baking for others, always taking a pie when she got her hair done. Millie was a member of the Immanuel Reformed Church and the Kensington Club.
Millie is survived by her daughter, Jan Stadtlander and her husband, Ed, of Meservey; a daughter-in-law, Pam Smit of Belmond; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Julia Swenson of Belmond, Gladys Spainhower of Clarion, Betty Delger and her husband, Hank, of Clarion, Helen Busick of Clarion, Ruth Lamfers and her husband, Harold, of Salina, Kan., and Arlene Smith and her husband, Brad, of St. Cloud, Minn.; and two brothers, Norville Anderson and his wife, Millie, of Clarion, and Roger Anderson and his wife, Sharon, of Independence. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and three brothers.
