CLEAR LAKE, IA-- Berniece Viola Lenning, 89, of 215 S.13th St., Clear Lake, died Sunday (Sept. 26, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. It was Berniece's request that her body be cremated. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made in her name to Hospice of North Iowa.

Berniece was born Feb. 10, 1915, the daughter of James and Ella (Knoll) Kurtz, at Erie, Ill. Berniece was the youngest of 12 brothers and sisters. At an early age they moved to Belmond, Iowa, and she attended school in Belmond, and from there they moved to Garner. After the death of her father they moved to Clear Lake. Berniece married Clarence Lenning on Aug. 14, 1933, in Albert Lea, Minn., and of this union a daughter, Marion was born.

Berniece is survived by her granddaughter, Jody Grau of Bemidji, Minn.; two great-grandsons, Joshua and Gerald Almendinger of Bemidji, Minn.; six nieces, Beverly Elder of Mason City; Betty Fox of Britt; Mary Ann (Louis) Formanek of Phoenix, Ariz.; Velma Miller of Des Moines; Dorothy (Ed) Scheffel of Mason City, and Karen Bender of Athens, Ala.; four nephews, Don (Mary) Best of Rockwell; William (LeeAnn) Kurtz of Klemme; James (Sally) Zisser of Janesville, Wis.; and Duane (Kay) Tideback of Sun Valley, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence, on March 20, 1993; daughter, Marion Grau; son-in-law, Gerald Grau; four brothers; and seven sisters. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.
