MASON CITY — Janice A. Smeby, 60, of 10 Sumac, died Thursday (Aug. 27, 1998) at her home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Nils "Chris" Hellevik officiating. Interment will take place at Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour before services at the church Monday. Memorials may be directed to the Janice A. Smeby Memorial Fund.
Janice A. Smeby was born Sept. 3, 1937, in Ottosen, the daughter of John and Olianna (Lee) Vinaas. Janice attended Waldorf College in Forest City for one year. She then came to Mason City and worked for Metalcraft for five years. Janice married Waldo "Wally" Smeby on June 27, 1959, in Ottosen. Janice stayed at home to raise her children. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active on the church board and helped teach Sunday school for more than 15 years. She was also a member of the Martha Circle, helping with many bazaars and activities. Janice also volunteered at Trinity preparing deposits for offering. Janice was a member of PEO Chapter IW. She was a hospital auxiliary volunteer and helped volunteer at school as a reading tutor. Janice also was a volunteer at Lime Creek Nature Center. Janice enjoyed her bridge club, coffee group, Investment Club, Football Club, Friday-night Dinner Group and golfing with her family and friends. She was a member of the Metalcraft Board of Directors and a very willing assistant to Wally in the business.
Jan was a loving wife, daughter, mother and grandmother. She treasured her time with her family most of all. She is survived by her husband, Waldo "Wally" Smeby, Mason City; a daughter, Cindy Erickson and her husband, Rick, Cedar Rapids; a son, Douglas Smeby, Woodbury, Minn.; two grandsons, Justin and Drew Erickson; her mother, Olianna Vinaas, Mason City; a brother, Alf Lee and his wife, Eugenia, Fort Dodge; five brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Ruth Smeby, Mason City, Royden and Verna Smeby, Joice, Viola and Jerry Jurasek, Mason City, Byron and Linda Smeby, Rockwell, and Glenn and Janet Smeby, Mason City, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.
