CLEAR LAKE — William "Bill" M. Westberg, 72, of 617 N. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Wednesday (July 29, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Clear Lake. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church. The family suggests memorials to the Clear Lake Community School Athletic Department.

Bill was born Dec. 4, 1925, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Gust Espe and Esther (Moard) Westberg. He graduated from Boone High School in 1942. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II. After the service, Bill moved back to Iowa and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in education. He taught at Urbana High School, Urbana, Iowa, and then Klemme where he was in the physical education department and also boys basketball coach. Bill married Betty Etchen in Klemme. They moved to Clear Lake in the fall 1961 where he was in the physical education department and later athletic director until his retirement in the spring 1987. Bill officiated many girls softball games and boys basketball games. Bill was an avid Hawkeye fan, Cub fan and enjoyed playing golf and cribbage. Bill was a member of United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, and the Iowa State Education Association.

Bill is survived by a son, Dr. Mark Westberg and his wife, Rebecca, of Clive, Iowa; and one daughter, Susan Anderson and her husband, Harlan, of Englewood, Colo.; five grandchildren, Jonathan Westberg, Curtis Anderson, Laura Westberg, Meghan Anderson and Ashley Anderson; one sister, Jane Seiffert and her husband, Jerry, of Iowa City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife in 1976.
