MASON CITY - Margaret C. Brakel, 88, of Mason City, died Monday (Jan. 27, 2003) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Scott Duffus of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Margaret C. Brakel Memorial Fund.

Margaret was born Sept. 23, 1914, in Mason City, the daughter of Alvin and Emma (Burmeister) Brakel. She attended Mason City High School and graduated in 1932, and went on to attend Iowa State Teacher's College. Margaret graduated with a bachelor's degree in business. She then taught business courses in several communities in Iowa: Colewell, 1936-1937; Klemme, 1937-1939; New Sharon, 1939-1940, and Mason City High School from 1940 until her retirement. She was an active member of several organizations: Iowa State Teacher's Association, National Teacher's Association, University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. Margaret was also well-traveled throughout Europe.

Those left the cherish her memory include her cousins, Darlene and Carl Lucas of Mason City, Sharlene and John Madouras of Kansas City, Mo., Louise Enright of St. Claire, Minn., George Burmeister of Humboldt, Texas, Judy and Larry Dew of Granite City, Mo., and Bob Burmeister of Mercer Island, Wash., and several other cousins.
