MASON CITY — Reta Mae Marty, 98, of 76 Linden Drive, died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Richard D. Scheerer officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. Memorials may be given to First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Reta was born Nov. 17, 1899, in Klemme, Iowa, the daughter of country Dr. Alexander Dwight and Mae (White) Spooner. Reta was raised in the Klemme and LuVerne area and graduated from LuVerne High School. She would later graduate from Coe College with her teaching certificate. Reta married George S. Marty on June 1, 1928, at Waterloo, Iowa. The Marty's were long time residents of Mason City where Mr. Marty practiced law. Reta taught English at Madrid, Iowa, and at Mason City High School. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Kappa Delta Sorority, past president of Women's Club, past president of Y.W.C.A., 67-year member PEO Chapter GN, Novel Club, U.G.L. Club, Browning Society and Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include one son, George S. Marty Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Winnetka, Ill.; daughter, Jean E. Nelson and husband, Daniel, of Lake San Marcos, Calif. and Alexandria, Minn.; five grandchildren, Susan McDonnell, of Copell, Texas; Douglas Marty, of Williamsburg, Va.; Marty Dutch, of Covina, Calif.; Kris Nelson, of Portland, Ore.; and Julie Carlson, of Evansville, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Timothy, Andrew, Jonathan, Anneliese, Austin, Taylor, Ryan, Hunter and McKenna. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1975; and four brothers, Lloyd, Dwight, Maynard and Victor.
