Des Moines -- Norman Albert Miller, 93, passed away July 5 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held July 14, 2010 at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines beginning at 11 a.m. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Norman was born March 12, 1917 in Des Moines, Iowa and proudly served his country in the Army's Red Bull 34th Infantry Division in the European Theatre during World War II. He was promoted from captain to full colonel before retiring from the Iowa National Guard in 1972. Friends called him "Cap" in the military and the nickname has been used ever since. Norman was employed at the Des Moines Register and Tribune as a linotype operator and was promoted to production manager before retiring in 1972. He was instrumental in forming the printer's union during his tenure. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for the past 50 years. His great-grandfather was a Baptist minister in New York. He loved bowling and was an avid golfer. He spent every fair weathered day golfing until 2009. He enjoyed being a lifetime member of the VFW; organizing their golf league and putting out their newsletter. He spent many summers with his son, Scott, in Boy Scouts and Indian Guides. He was active for many years in the Masons and Eastern Star. In his leisure time he enjoyed raising tropical fish.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents Royal and Alma Miller, his brother Charles, and his sister Edith Stowe. Those left to cherish Norman's life include his wife of 70 years, Helen; their children Patricia Kramersmeier, Scott Miller, and Susan (Roger) Neifert; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews alike.
