Hattie Dorothy Stevens was born Sept. 10, 1907, on a farm southeast of Hanford, Iowa, to William and Dora (Stoltenberg) Everhart. She was one of 11 children born to her parents. Her family later moved to a farm near Burchinal, where Hattie attended Bath School, a country school near Burchinal. She spoke only German until she learned the English language in school.
Hattie was united in marriage to Lloyd V. Stevens in December 1925 in Mason City. The couple lived in Swaledale and became the proud parents of four daughters. Hattie was an immaculate homemaker and tending to her husband and daughters was her greatest priority. She sewed clothing for her daughters, tended to their religious training, canned much of the garden produce and had compassion for small pets and animals. She and Lloyd enjoyed time together while socializing at the local restaurant. Hattie attained her first driver’s license during her middle-age years and delighted in driving her show-room quality ’54 Chevy. Some of Hatties’ leisure activities and interests included embroidery, watching Lawrence Welk, avidly cheering for the Minnesota Twins and thoroughly reading the newspapers, especially the Globe Gazette. Hattie is described by her daughters as a woman who treasured simplicity, was a strict disciplinarian, always concerned for her daughters and their families, sometimes stubborn and content in day-to-day life. She was an interested and nurturing grandmother. In September 1977, Hattie left Swaledale and moved to the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. Even when her family would come to spend time with her away from Oakwood, she was always anxious and happy to return to her familiar surroundings, where she greatly felt at home for the past 27 years.
Hattie will be missed dearly by family and friends who have shared her life. She is survived by her four daughters, Dorothy Walrod of Belmond, Donna (Bill) Hopley of Klemme, Doris (Fred) Flores of Mason City, and Deloras (Merle) Frohling of Meservey. She will also be sadly missed by her sister, Evelyn Sandy of San Marcos, Calif.; her five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. Preceding Hattie in death are her husband, Lloyd Stevens, in April 1974; her parents; her son-in-law, Babe Walrod; her six brothers and three sisters. Fullerton Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
