HUMBOLDT -- Beverly I. Bowen, 64, of Humboldt, formerly of Cedar Falls, passed away Oct. 24, 2004, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Mrs. Bowen is survived by her husband, Ralph Bowen of Humboldt; son, Russell Bowen and his wife Liessa of Raleigh, N.C.; daughters, Jodi Punke and her husband Todd of Wausau, Wis., and Audrey Upah of Ames; four grandchildren; brothers, Arnold Torkelson of Humboldt, Russell Torkelson of Hackensack, Minn., David Torkelson of Vincent, Steven Torkelson of Fort Dodge and Bruce Torkelson of Des Moines; and sisters, Naomi Torkelson of Thor, Lois Christopher of Thor, Pearl Pedersen of Renwick, Jean Lehman of Eagle Grove, Esther Presler of Sauk Center and Ruby Thompson of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Albert; and sister, Nina Abrams.
Beverly Inez Torkelson, the daughter of Jacob and Amy (Warland) Torkelson, was born Sept. 10, 1940, in Humboldt County. She attended school in Humboldt County and graduated from Eagle Grove High School. She attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City and was employed as an accountant following her education. She was united in marriage to Ralph Bowen on July 2, 1960, and the couple made their home in Humboldt County. In 1963, she joined her husband in Tegucigalpa, Honduras where he was stationed with the military. In 1965, they moved to Fort Pucker, Ala., until 1970 when they made their home at Fort Hood, Texas. In 1972, they moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where Beverly worked as a baby-sitter and served as church custodian. She received her accounting degree from Hawkeye Institute of Technology and was employed by EK Williams Accounting, eventually purchasing the business in 1986. She owned and operated the Busy Bee Accounting and Tax Service until her retirement in 1999 due to health. In 2003, the Bowen's moved to Humboldt. Mrs. Bowen was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and was an active past member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Cedar Falls. She has served as a past leader for the Girl Scouts and enjoyed baking bread, cooking, country music, and caring for her children and grandchildren.
