December 25, 1923 - July 9, 2010

HARTFORD, MI - Gene Ludwin Larsson, 86, of Hartford, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, in his home. The service to honor Gene's memory will be held at the Hartford United Methodist Church (where he was a member) on Tuesday, July 14, commencing at 2 P.M., with Reverend Ronald Hansen officiating. Gene will be laid to rest at Maple Hill Cemetery with military rites being conducted by VFW Post 1137, VFW Post 6803, American Legion Post 362 and their auxiliary. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gene's name may be made to the Hartford United Methodist Church memorial fund. The family will welcome friends from 6 to 8 P.M. on Monday, July 13, in the church where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 P.M. by the Peninsular #10 Lodge of Dowagiac.

Mr. Larsson was born December 25, 1923, in Dows, Iowa. He finished high school in Clarion, Iowa, in May 1941. He enlisted in the Army Air Force on November 1, 1942. He flew for over 2,000 hours in the European Theater as a radio operator and gunner. He obtained the rank of staff sergeant before he was discharged on January 6, 1946. He then spent his working life in the dairy and food industry, working at Cassopolis Dairy, Produce Creamery, Duffy Motts, and then retiring as superintendent of aseptic operations from Michigan Fruit Canners in June 1987. Mr. Larsson was a past Master and life member of the Cassopolis Masonic Lodge and a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a life member of the Hartford Lions Club, a Hartford City Councilman, member of the Hartford board of review and the Hartford planning commission.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; daughter, Susan Larsson of St. Joseph; daughter, Deborah (Jim) Whitney of Watervliet; daughter, Martha Moore of Decatur; and son, Brian (Rose) Larsson of Rio Rancho Estates, NM; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Marjorie, in 1994; great-granddaughter, Marissa Monroe; his parents, Harry and Iris (Tuel) Larsson; brothers, Harry and Craig Larsson; and a son-in-law, Bill Moore.
