January 25, 1996GARNER, IA -- Esther Lau, 92, of Worthington, Ohio, formerly of Garner, died Tuesday (Jan. 23, 1996) at the Worthington Nursing Home, in Worthington, Ohio. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garner, with the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick officiating. Inurnment will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. The family will receive family and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.
Esther Alvina Lau, the daughter of Henry and Augusta (Keel) Jante, was born July 14, 1903, on a farm north of Garner. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church northeast of Garner. She attended school at St. John's Lutheran Parochial School and Garner Community School. Esther was a telephone operator for Koerner's Telephone Company in Klemme for several years. On Oct. 16, 1926, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Harold Lau at Garner, with whom she shared 60 years of marriage. They made their home in Klemme. After her husband's death in 1987, she moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner, and later to Claremont Retirement Village in Columbus, Ohio, where she lived the past four years. Esther was a dedicated homemaker and mother, who loved to cook, bake and play bridge and "500" with relatives and friends. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Klemme during her years in Klemme and while in Garner, belonged to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cozette and David Lamb of Worthington, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Michelle Lamb and Jason Lamb; and a sister-in-law, Louise Jante of Owatonna, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd H. Lau on March 21, 1987; her parents; three sisters, Emma Hollatz on Aug. 31, 1981; Caroline Hoeft on July 9, 1987, and Minnie Hoeft on June 29, 1989; and four brothers, Albert Jante, Ed Jante, Henry Jante and her twin brother, Ernest Jante.
