Arnold Lu Verne Groen, 92, Meservey, died May 9, 2006 at the Belmond Care Center. Funeral services were held May 12 at First Reformed Church of Meservey with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.

Arnold was born on Sept. 14, 1913 to Harm J. and Lena (Fry) Groen of Meservey. He attended Meservey school, went to the First Reformed Church, and married Esther (Smith) of Meservey on Jan. 16, 1937. Arnold, Esther and first daughter Donna moved to Chicago for about eight years where he worked for Bauer and Black. They moved back to Meservey and he worked as a painter and wood finisher. For a few years his brother Marvin helped him. He was always very particular and did excellent work until he could not anymore. Their second daughter Diane was born after moving back from Chicago. Arnold enjoyed hunting and fishing, making and fixing things with his hands, working on cars, planting and harvesting big gardens, and loved to be with his family. He took care of his wife until she passed away in 2004. He loved to drive around in his blue Ford and check out some of his old fishing spots. He was always willing to help out his family and friends, and was known for the good soups he made and shared. He enjoyed looking at old family pictures.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brothers and sisters Harm, Bert, Christopher, George, Marvin, Tena, Lydia and Grace. Survivors include daughters Donna (Bud) Kuhlers of Belmond and Diane (Les) Peterson of Meservey; grandchildren Darla (Pat) White of Meservey, Lisa Kuhlers of Grimes, Kalin Kuhlers of Meservey, Angela (Chris) Cook of Kanawha, and Brad Peterson and Nicole Bennett of Alexander; great grandchildren Christine (Mike) Sandry of Thornton, Jordan White of Meservey, Koty Kuhlers of Meservey, and Madison, Peyton and Kerrigan Cook of Kanawha; great-great grandchild Eric Sandry of Thornton; sister-in-law Francis Groen of Mason City; and special niece Fredonna Tiffany.
