June 21, 2005Leo W. Barkema, 83, Belmond, died June 18, 2005 at the Belmond Care Center. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell. Leo was born June 27, 1921 in rural Goodell, the son of Hauko and Grace (Lieuwen) Barkema. He attended school in Goodell and served in the United States Army, achieving the rank of corporal. Leo married Noreen McMahon on November 21, 1942 in Belmond. They moved to Mason City in 1961. Leo worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 36 years in the maintenance department. He traveled extensively and made many trips to northern Minnesota to fish. He enjoyed golfing and once got a hole-in-one. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Theodore and Leland. Leo is survived by his wife of Belmond; brothers Harvey (Irene) Barkema of Forest City and Mervin (Irene) Barkema of Klemme; and sisters Marvel Stadtlander of Sheffield and Jean Ostendorf of Klemme.
