March 1, 2002Kurt Eliot Lobdell, 43, died Thursday, February 28, 2002 at his home in Belmond. Funeral services were held Monday, March 4 at St. John Lutheran Church, Belmond with Pastor Lowell H. Halvorson officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery. Music was provided by Carol Severson and Maxine Whitty, organists with Jim and Dianna Suntken, vocalists. Ushers were Henry Gerdes, Robert Wenzel and Robert Kalkwarf. Honorary bearers were Dalon Obrecht, Jerry Greenwood, Mark Middleton, Dave Larson, Tyler McNeal, John Cole, Sherman McNeal, Roy Sturm, Marty Thompson, and the Friday afternoon crew at Spare Time Lanes. Casket bearers were Greg Fliss, Andy Swenson, Dave Barkema, Don Havens, Brad Johnson and Randy "Jake" Just.
Kurt was born in Belmond on February 15, 1959, the son of Jack and Shirley (Nelson) Lobdell. He attended Belmond schools and graduated in May 1977. Kurt worked at the We -3 Markets while attending high school. He attended Central College in Pella from 1978 to 1982 majoring in social work and graduating cum laude. Kurt was employed with Eaton Corporation for 19 years. Kurt enjoyed bowling, collecting sports memorabilia, and all sports, especially wrestling.
Preceding him death were his father Jack Lobdell, step-father Eugene "Nick" Nicholson and his grandparents. Survivors include his mother, Shirley Nicholson of Belmond; sister Kimberly Miller of Iowa City; brothers Brett Lobdell and his wife Sonja of Belmond, Blake Lobdell and his wife Jane of Clear Lake, and Tracy Lobdell and Stacy Desizlets of Marshalltown; two nieces and four nephews.
