HENRY KATTER, 89, DIES HERE; PIONEER RESIDENT OF THE COUNTY – FUNERAL WILL BE HELD AT PEACE REFORMED CHURCH

Henry Katter, 89, pioneer resident of Hancock county, died at 5 o’clock Tuesday morning at the home of his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. George Goll with whom he had been living. Death was due to pneumonia; he became ill October 3.

Mr. Katter was born Apr. 23, 1853 at Ladbergen, Prussia. The family came to the United States in 1860, landing at Baltimore, Md., after eight weeks on the ocean. He was confirmed in the Reformed church at Knoxville, Ohio, March 21, 1869. He came to Hancock County in 1876 and lived with his parents on their homestead in Liberty Township. He married Anna Lisetta Meyer Dec. 19, 1878, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Mosebach. This was the first marriage in the congregation of the Peace Reformed church of which bother were members. The couple settled on a farm southeast of Garner and were among the pioneers of this section of the county. Two sons and six daughters were born to them, the sons preceding both parents in death. About 1925 the couple retired from active farming, living with their son, Henry, a few years and then moving to their new home just west of the old home place. About four years ago they came to with Mr. and Mrs. George Goll.

Mrs. Katter died May 8 of this year after the couple had been married for over 63 years. Surviving Mr. Katter are the six daughters: Mrs. Henry Kirchhefer, Garner; Mrs. Otto Schlawin, Klemme; Mrs. Geo. Goll, Garner; Mrs. Otto Schroer, Garner; Mrs. Walter Woiwood, Garner; Mrs. Elmer Bredlow, Hayfield; one brother Fred Katter, Minneapolis, Minn.; two sisters Mrs. Wm. Wittenberg and Tillie Huenemann both of Garner; a daughter-in-law Mrs. Ruth Katter, Garner; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Peace Reform Church in Ell township. The pastor Rev. Wm Huenemann will be in charge. Pallbearers will be Henry Boland, Otto Lemke, Menno Einhuis, Lewis Stahl, Roger Schlawin, and Donald Woiwood. Burial will be in Ell township cemetery.
